Martin began his competitive dancing career aged nine and went on to win the 12/13 Junior British Championships in Blackpool.
As a ballroom competitor aged 15, he reached the semi-final of the British National Junior Championship in 1996. Continuing his dancing at university, he was a 3 times winner of the Advanced Ballroom at IVDC. Forming a partnership with Gemma Clunie and coached by Anne Watkins and Rita Carradus, the pair won the 2007 British Amateur Classical Sequence Championship as well as every major Sequence Championship nationwide. Undefeated they ended their partnership in 2008. After joining the Oxford University Dance Team, Martin met his current partner and wife, Sarah. The pair competed in National Ballroom competitions winning numerous titles. Together they continued competing in Classical Sequence and recaptured the British Amateur Classical Sequence Championship title in 2010. The pair retired from the amateur dancing world in 2010 to turn professional, winning the 2012 British Professional Classical Sequence Championship and then retaining it in 2013. Martin is a Fellow of the UKA in Classical Sequence and Licentiate Member in both Latin and Ballroom. He is a Carl Allan Professional Award Winner and a Classique de Dance Award winner as both an Amateur competitor and as a Professional teacher. |
